Mental Health FAQ
For additional information and a complete list of questions & answers regarding Foria and our services, please visit our FAQs page.
Do I have to be a Foria patient to receive mental health services?
No! Foria's mental health services are open to everyone, whether you are receiving gender-affirming care with us or not.
Why does counselling price vary by province?
Prices for counselling sessions include provincial sales tax, which varies depending on your location. Mason's base rate is the same for all patients.
I'm already receiving counselling, but I'd like to switch to Foria. Is that possible?
Yes, absolutely. We're ready to support you wherever you are in your therapy journey – whether you're starting, re-starting, or already receiving counselling.
Is counselling covered by insurance?
Usually, yes. Registered Psychotherapists are covered by most extended health benefits plans, but we recommend checking with your individual provider before booking an appointment.
Do you offer direct billing for counselling?
Unfortunately we're unable to offer direct billing at this time. However, we can provide a receipt for each session that you can claim directly with your insurance provider.
Do I need a prior mental health diagnosis to receive medication?
No. You do not need any prior diagnosis to receive medication for anxiety or depression through Foria. Our Nurse Practitioners will assess whether you'd be a good fit for medication in your appointment.
My Foria clinician has referred me to another provider. Why?
Anxiety and depression can be managed by primary care providers, such as Nurse Practitioners. However, there may be situations where referral to other providers such as a therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist is recommended. This does not mean that you don't have anxiety or depression – it just means that other types of care providers can better meet your needs.
Does insurance cover medication assessments?
Foria's mental health assessments and follow-up appointments aren't directly covered by extended health benefits plans. This is because they are delivered by Nurse Practitioners instead of Registered Psychotherapists. However, if your insurance plan has a health spending account then that may cover your appointments. We recommend checking with your individual provider before booking.
